So this thought came into my mind one day and I thought: why no one talks about the late 90s? There is the famous Y2K problem, which may lead to the end of the internet. And no one seemed to talk about it, so I changed the whole visual of my game (well now just partially), to make it look like an OS from the late 90s.

The story now goes: the Y2K problem did happen, and the internet was forever frozen in 1999.12.31. After that, big companies stop working on more user-friendly OS. No one uses their computer as often as we do today, and smartphone is never a thing. Because without the internet, there is no reason to have a pocket computer. 

However, that doesn't mean the computers don't progress. -65  years, the first mechanical implants were born. -133 years, new tech allows a human to upgrade their sense by substituting their eyes and connecting them to computers. These implants are significantly expensive thus only a small part of human beings are able to perform such operations. After the procedure, they will be able to see and interact with a microprocessor in their body, through an OS like Windows 98.
